Bookmobile presented by Shell to provide Gulf South students with joy of reading

February 6, 2012

The Hornets and Shell announced that they have partnered to provide Gulf South students with the Hornets Bookmobile. The Hornets Bookmobile presented by Shell is a library-on-wheels which drives a love for reading an imagination by distributing free books to pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students. A ribbon-cutting to celebrate the launch of the Bookmobile will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2:30 p.m. at Vic A. Pitre Elementary School (1525 Spruce St., Westwego, La.).
Hornets center Emeka Okafor will join the festivities and provide students with an inspiring message about the importance of reading.

Shell and the Hornets share the same commitment to improve students overall performance by promoting reading and literacy as education is an important factor in a childs growth and development so they can become successful.

This is our first year supporting the Bookmobile and we couldnt be more excited about working with the Hornets on this important project, said Hasting Stewart, Shells Communications Business Manager Deepwater. We are thrilled with new look of the Bookmobile and with the resources it makes available to help kids experience the joy of reading.

The Hornets and Shell have both recognized that a child's reading skills are important to their success in school as well as personal life and will be vital to their success for college and work as they continue to grow. Reading helps students gain more knowledge, improve their grades and communication skills, as well as providing insight into other cultures around the world.

The Hornets and Shell are focused on enriching communities in the Gulf South by inspiring children to develop a life-long love for reading, said Hornets President Hugh Weber. We are grateful to Shell for their partnership on the Bookmobile and are ready to hit the road and distribute free books to local students.

The Hornets Bookmobile presented by Shell made its debut at the Krewe of Little Rascals parade on Feb. 5, as Hugo and the Honeybees distributed over 500 books. Since the 2007-08 season, the Hornets have distributed over 100,000 free books to Gulf South students.
