August 11, 2010

The New Orleans Hornets announced today that they have acquired Marco Belinelli from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Julian Wright.

Marco is an excellent shooter who can help spread the floor and give us added depth in the backcourt," said General Manager Dell Demps. "He has great international playing experience from his time in Italy as well as his two seasons in the NBA. We are excited about his addition to our roster."

Belinelli (6-5, 195), who was drafted in the first round (18th overall) by Golden State in 2007, averaged 7.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 66 games last season for Toronto. He shot a career-high .835 from the free-throw line and scored in double-digits 21 times last year, leading the bench in scoring on 22 occasions. Belinelli, 24 years old, played five seasons in Italy from 2002-07 before playing two seasons for Golden State. He averaged a career-best 8.9 points in 42 games (23 starts) during the 2008-09 season and has shot .387 or better from three-point range in each of his three NBA seasons. Belinelli has career average of 6.6 points, 1.4 assists and 15.9 minutes in 141 games.

Wright (6-8, 225) was drafted in the first round (13th overall) by New Orleans in the 2007 draft. Last year, he averaged 3.8 points, 2.1 rebounds in 12.8 minutes in 68 games (14 starts). Wright holds career averages of 4.0 points, 2.3 rebounds in 12.8 minutes in 179 games (34 starts).
