May 7, 2012
The New Orleans Hornets will host an Inspired for Summer Education tour in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, May 9. Hornets forward Lance Thomas will join Hugo and the Honeybees at Park Elementary School, as well as the Boys and Girls Club, to encourage students to stay engaged in learning during the summer.
The Hornets Bookmobile presented by Shell and the Hornets Mathmobile presented by Chevron will make appearances at three schools in Baton Rouge: Delmont Elementary School (9:00 a.m.), Redemptorist Elementary School (11:00 a.m.) and Park Elementary (1:30 p.m.). The day will conclude with a visit to a local Boys and Girls Club (4:00 p.m.). Hornets Emcee Rob Nice and Thomas will spend time congratulating students on their hard work during the school year, but also motivating them to continue reading and engaging in math and science activities throughout the summer.
Education is an important factor in the personal and economic development of our community and plays a key role in the lives and well-being of our youth, said Hornets President Hugh Weber. Our Bookmobile and Mathmobile have given us the opportunity to provide free books and teach the importance of education to thousands of students in the Greater New Orleans Area. Were excited to have the chance to spend the day in Baton Rouge and cheer them on to continue learning throughout the summer months.
The Hornets Mathmobile presented by Chevron is an interactive motor coach bus that distributes math and science books to students of all ages. The overall goal of the Hornets Mathmobile presented by Chevron is to demonstrate the importance of math by connecting math to basketball. The Mathmobile features a number of iPads with built-in applications that focus on targeted math skills such as: addition and subtraction, division, fractions, geometry, algebra, and other related math subjects.
In addition, the Hornets Bookmobile presented by Shell will also make the trip to Baton Rouge. The Bookmobile is a library-on-wheels which drives a love for reading an imagination by distributing free books to pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Since the 2007-08 season, the Hornets have distributed over 100,000 free books to Gulf South students.
The Hornets Mathmobile presented by Chevron is perfect example of Chevron continuing to fuel our community through literacy and math education in the communities in which they live and work.
The pep rallies will also feature Dr. Katrice Albert, PhD and Vice Provost Equity for Diversity & Community Outreach from the Louisiana State University Office of Academic Affairs. The Hornets are committed to giving our youth the tools they need to be successful and Dr. Alberts message will give students firsthand insight into the importance of summer learning to their futureparticularly looking ahead to college.
