Hornets and Louisiana Legislative Charity Fund Dedicate Refurbished Basketball Court

March 2, 2012

The New Orleans Hornets and The Louisiana Legislative Charity Fund will dedicate a refurbished basketball court at Emmitt J. Douglas Park (511 East 11th Street) in New Roads, La. on Sunday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. Hornets emcee Rob Nice will host the event and Hugo and the Honeybees will be on hand to help dedicate the court.

New Roads Mayor Robert Myer, Hornets representatives and Representatives John Schroder and Joseph “Major” Thibaut will be on-hand during the dedication and will be available to media directly following the short ceremony. Prior to the event, inflatable games for kids will be set up. The team will also provide a free basketball clinic on the courts directly following the presentation.

“Our commitment to give back to local communities expands throughout the entire state of Louisiana,” said Hornets President Hugh Weber. “Our efforts to refurbish local basketball courts provide young people with a safe place to learn the game of basketball and participate in activities that promote fitness and healthy habits. These playgrounds not only help the Hornets family interact directly with the local residents, but it also connects the residents with their neighborhood and gives them something they can be proud of.”

“I am thrilled to have had the chance to select Emmitt J. Douglas Park to be refurbished,” said Representative Joseph “Major” Thibaut. “Thanks to the Hornets and the Louisiana Legislative Charity, we have a beautiful new place for kids in New Roads to play basketball.”

Proceeds raised from the annual Louisiana Legislature's Annual HoopLA charity basketball game and a Hornets’ contribution provided the funds for the court’s make-over. “Major” Thibaut’s name was randomly selected out of the list of names of all legislators who participated in the game this summer, and he selected the court at Emmitt J. Douglas Park in his district to be refurbished.

“I am so happy that the Hornets organization chose to invest in communities like New Roads,” Myer said. “To have this court in the heart of our community is a wonderful asset. The court is a major contribution towards the revitalization efforts of Emmitt Douglas Park."

The court at Emmitt J. Douglas Park will be painted to replicate the Hornets hardwood at the New Orleans Arena.
