FORMER HORNETS OWNER GEORGE SHINN
TO DONATE $500,000 TO THE SALVATION ARMY
Donation will provide stabilized housing opportunities for families in New Orleans area
April 11, 2011
Former New Orleans Hornets owner George Shinn made a $500,000 contribution on behalf of the George Shinn Foundation to The Salvation Army today in a ceremony featuring Shinn, New Orleans City Council President Arnie Fielkow, Hornets President Hugh Weber and Captain Ethan Frizzell from The Salvation Army. The funds will be distributed through The Salvation Army to provide housing opportunities for families in the Southeast Louisiana region.
New Orleans is a special city that I will always consider home, and I want to continue to use my blessings and resources to positively impact the lives of those who share my love for this city, said Shinn. My goal is continue to leave a lasting legacy in this community that will only help brighten the future of New Orleans and its residents.
The $500,000 donation will be used to build family stabilization housing in New Orleans and across South Louisiana. Over the past few years, The Salvation Army has recognized that there are segments of the homeless population, especially families and veterans, that at one time would have been housed with family and friends but are now disenfranchised from a stable living environment. Families are stabilized through affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, and strong emotional and physical community support systems, and the George Shinn Foundations $500,000 donation will make a tremendous impact in stabilizing New Orleans families and neighborhoods.
"The culture of New Orleans is that family takes care of family, neighbors love neighbors. The Salvation Army recognizes that stabilization of the family unit needs to happen in independent single family housing units and not in shelters," said Captain Ethan Frizzell from The Salvation Army. "It is an ambitious goal but family restoration is pivotal to community restoration. We are so thankful for the generosity the George Shinn Foundation has shown in this significant contribution that will give many lives a foundation for a successful future."
The entire city of New Orleans appreciates the work that The Salvation Army and George Shinn Foundation have done to help our residents rebuild, said New Orleans City Council President Arnie Fielkow. Both of these organizations show their passion and pride for our city on an incredible level, and we appreciate their continued work and commitment to our community.
