As tempting as it might be to want to rush Hornets projected top scorer Eric Gordon back into the lineup, Monty Williams said Thursday that the team wants to make sure Gordons bruised knee injury doesnt hamper him later in the season. As a result, Williams doesnt expect Gordon to play in Fridays home game against the Phoenix Suns.
I would guess no, Williams said of whether the shooting guard will be in uniform tomorrow night. Because we dont want to put him in a situation where hes hurting in February, when we couldve taken care of it in December. From that standpoint, I think its prudent to keep him out. (His status is) still day-to-day. The doctors want to be cautious with him so that its not something that lingers on, especially with all of these games piling up. Well just have to wait and see every day.
Without Gordon on Wednesday, the Hornets produced one of the most eye-opening final scores around the NBA, a performance theyll try to match in their attempt to improve to 3-0 on the young season. New Orleans has generated consecutive balanced efforts in the first two games, something that bodes well if the Hornets have to play through injury absences.
I think our guys understand the way we have to play, Williams said. We dont have the go-to guys necessarily that we did last year. We have them in a different way. It could be by-committee, especially without Eric. Different guys are stepping up and that does build confidence.
