Vasquez provides depth at point guard

With only one point guard on the roster who has extensive NBA regular season experience, the New Orleans Hornets added to their depth at the position, obtaining Greivis Vasquez from Memphis on Christmas Eve. The Hornets dealt 2010 first-round pick Quincy Pondexter to the Grizzlies in the two-player trade.

Following the release of Jerome Dyson earlier Saturday, the Hornets had three point guards on their depth chart, including starter Jarrett Jack, Carldell “Squeaky” Johnson and Trey Johnson. Squeaky Johnson has yet to appear in an official NBA game, while Trey Johnson’s previous experience in the league consists of 12 regular season contests spread over two campaigns. Adding to the need for help at point guard is the fact that Jack will miss Monday’s game at Phoenix as a result of a league-mandated one-game suspension. The suspension is a result of Jack’s DUI arrest that took place during the 2011 All-Star break.

Roughly 48 hours before New Orleans will tip off its 2011-12 season in Phoenix (Monday, 8 p.m. Central time, Cox Sports TV), the Hornets’ roster now consists of 15 players. Of those 15 players, only six are returnees from last season, meaning there are nine new Hornets on the roster.

Here is a rundown of the current players, listed with their positions, generally speaking (the first player listed in each position group is the projected starter, according to comments by Monty Williams):
Point guard: *Jarrett Jack, Greivis Vasquez, Carldell Johnson, Trey Johnson
Shooting guard: Eric Gordon, *Marco Belinelli
Small forward: *Trevor Ariza, Al-Farouq Aminu, DaJuan Summers
Power forward: *Carl Landry, *Jason Smith, Gustavo Ayon, Lance Thomas
Center: *Emeka Okafor, Chris Kaman

* Returning player from 2010-11 season
