ESPN.com forecast calls for seventh in West

As part of Hornets.com’s preview of the 2009-10 season, over the next several weeks, I’ll be taking a closer look at what several of the major websites and publications are writing about the team. September is usually an extraordinarily quiet month in terms of NBA news, making it the perfect time to review what impartial observers are saying about the Hornets.

ESPN.com weighed in this week with its projected 2009-10 Western Conference standings. The site projects New Orleans to register a 47-35 record and finish in seventh place in the conference. That would represent a two-win decline from 2008-09 and the exact same No. 7 seeding the Hornets earned last season.

Realistically, until the Hornets prove it on the floor – which they obviously can’t do until Oct. 28 – I have no problem with any of the teams ESPN picked to place ahead of them in the West. Perhaps you could make a strong argument that New Orleans should be projected ahead of Utah, but even in that case, ESPN.com called for the Jazz to also go 47-35 and win out by a “tiebreaker.”
