State of Louisiana Recognizes Hornets

The Louisiana state senate issued a proclamation on June 19 to the New Orleans Hornets. Here is the resolution:

A RESOLUTION

To commend and congratulate the players, coach, owner, and staff of the New Orleans Hornets Basketball Team for a terrific season in the 2007-2008 National Basketball Association.

WHEREAS, the New Orleans Hornets Basketball Team has concluded its Cinderella season as the NBA Southwestern Division champions winning the first tier of the National Basketball Association playoffs defeating the Dallas Mavericks in a best of five series in a home game at the New Orleans Arena; and

WHEREAS, at the helm, NBA Coach of the Year, Byron Scott led his exceptional team to the first playoff seed in four years; and, on the evening of the award presentation, April 29, 2008, the Hornets beat the Dallas Mavericks, 99-94, in Game 5 of the quarterfinal series to advance in the Western Conference playoffs; and

WHEREAS, Byron Scott, who took the head coach position during the 2004-05 season, made a bold prediction that he would transform the Hornets into a winning NBA team in three to four years; and as a man of his word, he made that prophecy come true this electrifying season; and

WHEREAS, the road to the playoffs had been a long one for the franchise since its relocation from Charlotte, North Carolina in 2002, to the Crescent City, after fourteen seasons; and

WHEREAS, these mighty warriors of the court: Chris Andersen, Hilton Armstrong, Ryan Bowen, Rasual Butler, Tyson Chandler, Melvin Ely, Mike James, Jannero Pargo, Chris Paul, Morris Peterson, Peja Stojakovic, Bonzi Wells, David West, and Julian Wright place solidarity above individual ambition as their universal motivation and the key to success in the zone; and

WHEREAS, the sports fans of the New Orleans Hornets have witnessed uncommon winning streaks and fiery action at the hoops from team members fortified with exceptional skill and athletic prowess; and

WHEREAS, the Hornets have amassed a bevy of impressive individual and team statistics for the season which include competitive benchmarks of the highest order such as Chris Paul as All-NBA First Team, David West and Chris Paul as members of the NBA Western Conference All-Star Team, Chris Paul as two-time Western Conference Player of the Month, and other team accomplishments such as most wins in a season (56), most on-the-road wins (26), fewest turnovers in a game (4), most three-pointers in a season (621) and most team rebounds in a season (3,862); and

WHEREAS, the New Orleans Hornets have inspired a heightened measure of pride in the citizenry of the state that springs from the enthusiasm and interest created by a successful professional sports organization competing for supremacy on a national level; and

WHEREAS, the team has won the hearts of the community both on and off the court, for everyone connected to the New Orleans Hornets team offers his time and energies to make New Orleans a better city and Louisiana a better state; and

WHEREAS, off the court, Byron Scott has established a nonprofit organization that supports various childrens charities; and

WHEREAS, the team players both individually and collectively, have assembled an admirable record of humanitarian services to the community with numerous activities such as hosting holiday dinners and elementary school fitness events in New Orleans East, offering financial support for Hoops for Homes, a program to rebuild the storm-damaged residences of teachers and whole neighborhoods, an idea that has spread throughout the Gulf South region, and sponsoring the Hornets Bookmobile, a traveling library that visits more than 150 schools and delivers 30,000 books to children of all ages; and

WHEREAS, the Hornets are vested in the future growth of the city as well, by utilizing simple platitudes, such as performing good deeds without thought of reward, lending a helping hand whenever possible, inspiring students and children to learn, and assisting others to achieve their dreams, all the while striving to be gracious, appreciative and humble benefactors; and

WHEREAS, during the regular season, home game tickets are donated to nonprofit organizations that counsel under-served youth affording boys and girls an opportunity to attend professional sporting events; over 31,000 tickets have been donated in the last six years; and

WHEREAS, Peja Stojakovic inaugurated Charitabowl to support Pejas Courts for Kids program, a basketball court refurbishment project, organized in conjunction with Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Louisiana to promote health and fitness education; and

WHEREAS, Top Hats and High Tops, a black-tie evening that generates proceeds to benefit all New Orleans charitable initiatives supported by the Hornets including Hoops for Homes and the Shinn Foundation; and

WHEREAS, in hard-fought conference play, the game seven loss to the San Antonio Spurs was an emotional punch that every Hornet took on the chin, however, their confidence remains unshaken, for they have no fear, for the New Orleans are a squad of young players with an average age of twenty-eight years, and these talented athletes possess considerable drive, courage and esprit de corps on the court as well as in the community, and these bold characteristics shall serve them well as they pursue their goal of future National NBA championships.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate the New Orleans Hornets Basketball Team, NBA Coach of the Year, Byron Scott, team president Hugh Weber, general manager Jeff Bower, and owners, George Shinn and Gary Chouest on a magnificent season and commends their community service activities and achievements that have aided in the renewal of the city of New Orleans.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the distinguished accomplishments of the Hornets organization brings tremendous pride, honor, and joy to the citizens of the state of Louisiana.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Byron Scott, head coach of the New Orleans Hornets, and to team owners, George Shinn and Gary Chouest.

A RESOLUTION

To commend George Shinn, owner of the New Orleans Hornets, and the team for an outstanding 2007-2008 National Basketball Association (NBA) season and to designate Monday, June 16, 2008, as George Shinn and the New Orleans Hornets Day at the Louisiana House of Representatives.

WHEREAS, the New Orleans Hornets are an exceptional NBA basketball team in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference; and

WHEREAS, the very talented 2007-2008 New Orleans Hornets team members are Chris Andersen, Hilton Armstrong, Ryan Bowen, Rasual Butler, Tyson Chandler, Melvin Ely, Mike James, Jannero Pargo, Chris Paul, Morris Peterson, Peja Stojakovic, Bonzi Wells, David west, and Julian Wright; and

WHEREAS, this past season, the team was led with expert skill and guidance by its longtime owner, George Shinn; team president, Hugh Weber; general manager, Jeff Bower; head coach, Byron Scott; four assistant coaches, Darrell Walker, Kenny Gattison, Charlie Parker, and Paul Pressey; and athletic trainer, Terry Kofler; and

WHEREAS, George Shinn has been the distinguished owner of the Hornets from the teams inception in the 1988-1989 NBA season as the Charlotte Hornets in North Carolina, where the team played for fourteen seasons; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Shinn filed an applications with the NBA in early 2002 to move the Hornets to New Orleans, and the team began playing in the Crescent City during the 2002-2003 NBA season; and

WHEREAS, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Hornets temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City for the 2005-2006 season and played games in both Oklahoma City and New Orleans during the 2006-2007 season; and

WHEREAS, the Hornets made a full and triumphant return to New Orleans for the 2007-2008 season, hosting twenty sold-out crowds; and

WHEREAS, the New Orleans Hornets recently completed the unforgettable 2007-2008 NBA season with a winning record of 56-26, finishing at the top of the division standings for the first time in franchise history; and

WHEREAS, in addition to being the 2007-2008 Southwest Division Champions, the Hornets also set several franchise records, including most wins in a season, most road wins in a season, most wins in a single month, fewest turnovers in a game, most three-pointers in a season, most team rebounds in a season, and most wins on a road trip; and

WHEREAS, the Hornets made an impressive run in the NBA playoffs, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the first round with a record of 4-1 but losing a highly competitive series to the San Antonio Spurs in game seven of the Western Conference Semifinals; and

WHEREAS, Byron Scott was deservingly recognized for his outstanding efforts as head coach of the New Orleans Hornets by being named the 2007-2008 NBA Coach of the Year; and WHEREAS, Chris Paul, the Hornets starting point guard, was named to the 2007-2008 All-NBA First Team and was a two-time NBA Western Conference Player of the Month in December of 2007 and March of 2008; and

WHEREAS, David west, the Hornets starting power forward, and Chris Paul were members of the 2008 NBA Western Conference All-Star Team; and

WHEREAS, in addition to their amazing accomplishments on the court, the Hornets are also committed to serving the people of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana through tireless community service; and

WHEREAS, as dedicated and active members of the New Orleans community, the Hornets provide local children with tickets to home games, encourage New Orleans students to read, recognize outstanding student readers at home games, grant wish requests to terminally and chronically ill children, work with the Susan G. Komen Foundation to raise breast cancer awareness, hold a special home game 4-H night as a fundraiser, and host free basketball skills clinics across the Gulf South region; and

WHEREAS, the Hornets have organized several community outreach projects, including the Hoops for Homes program to help rebuild homes in areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the New Orleans Hornets Bookmobile to promote the importance of reading in local schools; and

WHEREAS, the members of the New Orleans Hornets franchise merit a sincere and heartfelt measure of commendation for their awesome achievements in the great sport of basketball, for their dedication to excellence, and for their steadfast commitment to the city of New Orleans.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend George Shinn and the New Orleans Hornets for an outstanding 2007-2008 NBA season, does hereby congratulate the team on its highly successful playoff run, and does hereby designate Monday, June 16, 2008, as George Shinn and the New Orleans Hornets Day at the Louisiana House of Representatives.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted to George Shinn, owner of the New Orleans Hornets.
