Hornets Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Monty Williams

On the game:
I said to our team, we competed every day since we started our practices and we continue to get better, because our guys just play hard and I think that cam make up for some mistakes. I dont want to get too excited about anything right now, but at the same time if we compete like that, it gives yourself a chance to win games, I just thought our high level of intensity, even when we made mistakes, it made up for what we didnt do well, weak side defense, giving up offensive rebounds. I thought as the game progressed we got better.

On the new guys:
Well I just think they are guys that should get more comfortable with me and the team as we go along. Eric (Gordon), is a guy that is as explosive as anybody, but I think what people dont understand is that he defends. He gets into the ball. He is strong. I want him to be free out there."

(Chris) Kaman, hes been there done that. He has been an all star. Hes got to learn how we do things, but I think the fans will love that these guys love the game and compete every game.

Hornets Center Chris Kaman

I felt a little uncomfortable early on, a little stiff. Im an older guy, you know? I just have to get back in the rhythm a little bit. Its been a while since Ive played basketball like that. I went out there and played as hard as I could and bring some energy on the defensive end. When I had the offensive opportunities, I took advantage of those. All in all, I thought we played well as a team and our defense was solid, especially the last three quarters. These coaches are very meticulous about where guys are and where they are supposed to be. Its a help defensive setup and I think it works well.

Hornets Forward Jason Smith

We made some adjustments after that first quarter. I know they scored 28 points. Thats not our defensive philosophy and principles. We came out in the second and third, then closed it out in the fourth with our type of basketball. Coming in to this season, I knew the system a little better. And Im glad to be back with this team and this coaching staff.

Grizzlies Post Game Quotes

Head Coach Lionel Hollins

On the game:
We had good moments, but there were moments where it was a lot more sloppy than I would want. I think that we came out with good focus, good energy. Our conditioning is not where it needs to be, and we just have to improve our work ethic as we move forward and our focus to where we can get to be a good team. We are not a very good team right now. Obviously, we can make excuses for the big guys we dont have, and we are having to play small. We are playing guys that probably arent going to be on our team as we go forward, but the core group has to work hard and they have to lead everybody else.

On key areas to improve on:
There are not a few key areas. We have to become a different team before we start playing. We have to play better defense, we have to rebound better, we have to get to the free throw line. We had 18 free throws and they had 34 free throws. We have to execute offensively better, we have to shoot better, we have to pass better. You just name it and we have to get better at it.

Grizzlies Forward Rudy Gay

On the team improving heading into the regular season:
Were a different team than we were last year in the playoffs. We need to get a few things straightened out then well be fine. We just had these two pop-up games and a week of practice, you cant expect to be where we were last year at this time. Its going to take some time but things will click and well be fine. Were getting better we just need to keep getting better.

Grizzlies Guard Tony Allen

On how to improve going into the season opener:
Were still a work in progress, weve got several players out, but this is what we have to do. We just have to continue to keep working and well start getting a better feel for each other. Were just like all of the teams in the league, we all have similar situations. As we get a better feel for how our offense will go through certain players well improve and get much better. We need to keep working on improving our team defense and that will come with time. We have a long way to go and well use the next couple of days to get ready for the opener.
