Hornets Mathletes Program, Chevron Recognize Academic Achievement
February 23, 2012

Chevron has a core focus of investing in education, especially in the math curriculum. This school year, the Hornets launched the Mathletes program, presented by Chevron, in St. Tammany Parish. The Hornets Mathletes program will incentivize over 10,000 students for academic achievement in the math curriculum. The program will culminate with the opportunity for all Mathletes to be recognized at a Hornets game and receive great prizes throughout the school year.

Earlier this month, students who increased their math GPA by one letter grade or maintained an ‘A’ average in math at the end of the 2nd quarter, received a special edition Hornets hat courtesy of Chevron. Hugo and members of the Honeybees dance team visited each school to help distribute the prizes to Mathletes students.

Chevron will also provide over $5,000 worth of scholarship funds for winners of a grant writing contest that will take place later in the spring semester. The top three grant submissions will have the opportunity to present their grant in front of a panel of judges before a Hornets game and winners will be recognized at center court during half-time.

“Chevron has partnered with the New Orleans Hornets for the last two seasons where we have proudly built numerous corporate and community programs” said Vice President of Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit, Warner Williams. “Chevron teaming up with the Hornets on a program such as Mathletes is a winning example of how working together, we are investing in the educational foundation which is an important factor in the economic growth and well-being of the Gulf Coast communities in which we live and work.”
