Postgame report: From the Pelicans locker room

Pelicans Coach Monty Williams
On tonight’s game
“First half was a tough one for us. We wouldn’t score the ball and defensively we executed a poor game plan. In the second half we executed, which allowed us to score the ball. You cannot control the ball all the time, especially on the road. Defensively, our focus was poor in the first half, but in the second half we picked it up and gave ourselves a chance.”

On the game’s final minutes
“If you are giving them extra possessions, it is hard to win a game. We gave up 23 second chance points tonight. If you are worn out down the stretch, you are almost looking for someone to bail you out. Brian Roberts did his best, and when Anthony Davis got his sixth foul that changed everything. We have guys trying to execute end-of-game plays who are not used to being in that type of situation, so it’s tough.”

On Al Jefferson
“In the first half he was tremendous. He shot the ball 30 times tonight and he ended up with 33 points, so we were not that efficient on him tonight. I thought we did a better job in the second half. He got where he wanted to go. I could blame it on our execution but he’s a tremendous player.”

Pelicans guard Brian Roberts
On tonight’s game
“Shots weren’t falling for us, it was difficult. We just tried to stay in it defensively. When the offense isn’t clicking, we have to rely on defense. Luckily we did not have too big of a margin going into halftime. Then in the second half we got things rolling but we just came up a little short.”

On the game’s final minutes
“We had a few chances to win the game. They missed a couple free throws and gave us the chances, but we just couldn’t get over that hump. We still had chance at the end to make a shot, but just couldn’t do it.”

Pelicans Forward Anthony Davis
On tonight’s game
“We played great defensively, but we just couldn’t get the ball in the basket. They had the lead, but it was tough to get out that hole. We gave ourselves a couple of chances to win, but we didn’t capitalize on them. We fought hard and played well, there is always the next one.”

On his play tonight
“I think I played well. I missed some shots, but I know my team expects me to score. I am definitely trying to do that. It is only my second game back, but I am just trying go out there and have fun and play hard.”
