Postgame report: From the Pelicans locker room

Pelicans Coach Monty Williams
On getting a win going into the All-Star break
“Our first quarter defense was really good tonight, second quarter defense kind of fell off but we got it back in the third with a big offensive push. I thought our defense helped us do that. Down the stretch, I thought our guys just made plays by being physical and tough on defense. We missed a few shots, but I thought we got off to a better start tonight.”

On Anthony Davis getting into early foul trouble
“It’s part of the game. He is going to have those nights. We would love to only have those once a year, but when he did get into foul trouble, other guys stepped up. [Brian Roberts] was really great in the fourth quarter in pick-and-roll and distributing. I thought Al-Farouq [Aminu] was about as good as he has been all year with his energy and some of the plays he made down the stretch.”

On forcing turnovers in late in the game
“During that time it gets very physical and the ball bounces all over the place. For whatever reason, our length may have bothered [the Bucks] at the rim. We had really good switches, and that can throw you off a little bit. I’m not quite sure, but I’m just glad that it worked out for us.”

Pelicans Guard Eric Gordon
On the team’s tempo going into the second half
“Well defensively, we weren’t aggressive and we weren’t on point with it. We really stepped it up in the second half offensively and defensively. We just needed to get back into the rhythm of playing well on both sides.”

On offensive consistency
“It’s always difficult for our opponent to guard us when we’re scoring in all cylinders. It’s good to see that and you’re unpredictable when you are scoring like that.”

Pelicans Forward Al-Farouq Aminu
On the defensive effort going into the second half
“First off, we knew what it was defensively that we needed to key in on. I think everyone made a conscious effort to make sure it was a little more sound on defense. I felt like in the second quarter, it was just a little tough and we were not in our defensive positions. We did a better job in the second half with that.”

On the last-minute defense
“It means a lot for our team. When it comes to getting a stop, we take a lot of pride in that. We wanted to see how good we can do at the end of the game and it’s a step in the right direction.”
