Postgame report: From the Pelicans locker room

Pelicans Coach Monty Williams on his team’s expectations at the end of the preseason:

“We’re trying to create a culture. We have the youngest team in the NBA. We teach our guys that every time you step on the floor, you have to compete. These games don’t mean a lot to the rest of the NBA but for us, when you’ve got a brand new team and you’re young, you have to take advantage of every moment. I just like the way that we competed tonight. We certainly had way too many turnovers but we’re trying to mesh and get chemistry out there on the floor. It’s going to happen but we have to cut that down.”

On his team’s efforts in the preseason:

“We’re relatively healthy. We’ve got some guys with bumps and bruises but the reality is that we had a decent camp. Can we improve? A lot. We’re not even close to what I think we can be but it’s going to take a lot of work and commitment. The camp was, from a work standpoint; I thought we did a lot to improve and yet we still have so many things that guys don’t know because they’re new. It was a good month for us but we have to turn the page and get ready for the regular season.”

On Tyreke Evans:

“He still has a ways to go. He’s not in game shape. Defensively, he’s still learning what we do on the weak side and that was one of the things that I talked to him about in free agency when he signed with us. I just think he’s going to get better. His limit is himself. If he puts his work in he’s going to get better. The guy is only a young 20-year-old so, he’s got a ways to go. We have a really young team so we’ve just got to improve.”

On playing Tyreke Evans with the rest of the starters:

“We wanted to try and limit the minutes tonight but I did want to get a chance to look at that group of Tyreke (Evans) and Eric (Gordon) and Jrue (Holiday), along with AD (Anthony Davis) and Ryan (Anderson). It’s certainly not a big enough sample size but you can kind of see if we can execute and get stops; for one we don’t have to call plays and then we can take advantage of a number of things. We’ve got a ways to go. I’m not going to get happy on the forum about preseason. We’ve got too much work to do and an unbelievable schedule. Nobody is going to give you anything in this league.”
