Postgame report: From the Pelicans locker room

Pelicans Coach Monty Williams
On Damian Lillard
“The last seven minutes, Damian Lillard put on a show as far as getting to the basket and breaking down our defense. Damian scored 16 points the last six minutes of the game and that hurt us big time.”

On their small lineup
“Out of the third quarter we were just exchanging baskets and that’s just not how we play. It got to the point where we were just going back and forth and some of our guys just got worn down with that kind of basketball. We just didn’t play great defense tonight against their small lineup. We had some miscommunications on our switches early in the game. We got better in the second half.”

On the mental and physical challenge
“It’s both a mental and physical challenge for the team to finish these games this week. It’s at that point in the year where we won three in a row and then we lose two, so you feel like you have a rhythm but you just lose close games. It’s not like we’re not competing or not playing well, we just haven’t played well enough.”

Pelicans Guard Anthony Morrow
On the loss
“I think the effort and the focus is there. We just have to lock in on certain situations. It comes and goes. That’s what happens with a young team. We just have to continue to fight and stay with it. That was a good team. That’s two good playoff teams that we just lost to, and we were right there in the end. That’s all you can ask for is to give ourselves a chance to win the game. There are a lot of positives to take from it. A loss is a loss, and we aren’t making any excuses.”

On the fourth quarter
“Obviously, we gave up a lot of points in the fourth quarter. Any time you give up 30 points to a team like that, it’s going to be tough to win. They shoot a lot of threes and got a lot of long rebounds. We did a good job offensively. Defensively we were lacking. They shot the ball really well. I take my hat off to them.”

Pelicans Forward Anthony Davis
On the loss
“We just didn’t get the stops. I missed some shots. They made some shots. We just have to defend. We can’t let them score 30-something points in one quarter. We especially need to defend. We can’t allow that in the fourth. We just have to get stops in crunch time situations.”

On scoring a career high 36 points
“I don’t care about that. I only care about winning. We lost, so all of that is up to you guys.”

On the growth of the team
“We are getting better. Collectively, we are getting better each day, each week and each practice. I think over the course of time, we are getting better, especially with the injuries we have had. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell when you don’t have all of your guys.”
