Postgame report: From the Pelicans locker room

Pelicans Head Coach Monty Williams
On the overall team effort
“The first quarter was not something to be happy about. Our guys grinded it out in the second and the third. We only gave up 31 points compared to the 34 points we gave up in the first quarter. That happens. We don’t like, but sometimes teams just make shots. That was what I expressed to the guys that look they made shots, but it’s going to come back to us. We just had a number of things happen well for us tonight. We only had six turnovers for the game. Jrue (Holiday) had 12 assists, no turnovers. Eric (Gordon) when we needed a bucket, when we needed him to make a play for us tonight, he was really, really good and losing Tyreke (Evens), different guys had to step up and play. That’s the NBA season. Jason (Smith) was banged up a little bit, but he just kept playing, kept digging in and Ryan (Anderson) was Ryan. So, a great team effort, but I love the fact that we didn’t give in to the way we played in the first quarter.”

On the team’s solid play, going 5-of-7 since losing Anthony Davis
“We just work at it. That’s about it. You take it when you can. Obviously, guys are a bit more comfortable with our system. I just think we have this attitude of fighting, no matter what the situation. We’ve been down, we’ve been in tough situations and guys just continue to fight and stick to our system. That’s a big deal with young teams. Sometimes teams score, it’s the NBA, guys make tough shots and our mindset has to be no matter what happens, we have to stay the course. I think that’s what we’ve been able to do all season long and we just have to take the wins when we can.”

Pelicans guard Eric Gordon
On his hot shooting tonight
“I was just attacking. Whenever I get the ball, I feel like I can make a shot. Tonight, I was getting to the rim early and I started knocking down shots. I made it easy for myself. I took advantage of some open shots.”

On the play of Jrue Holiday
“He’s a dynamic point guard. He’s a big guard that can do multiple things: pass, shooting, he can do everything. Now we just have to get everybody to play consistently all of the time.”

Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday
On having no turnovers this game
“That’s the goal for me every game. Fortunately, I’ve had a couple of games like that this year and I’d like to have more.”

On the win tonight
“The win was big. We just stuck to our principles. It’s hard. It’s passion. It’s the will to win. We know how tough it is. With Anthony out, people have to step up. Lou has been coming in big. Ryan’s obviously been playing like crazy since he came back. We have some people knocking down shots and playing well.”
