Off the Court: Austin Rivers

By: Kyle Bass, Hornets.com

Austin Rivers, who just turned 20 years old in August, is one of five players on the New Orleans Hornets roster born in the 1990s. The Duke University product is the son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, giving the dates of Jan. 16 (Hornets at Celtics on ESPN) and March 20 (Celtics at Hornets) added meaning for the family and NBA fans. Hornets.com caught up with the younger Rivers recently to learn more about some of his interests away from the game:

Person who had the most influence on his basketball career: “My father.”

Person who had the most influence on his development off the court: “My AAU coach Therion Joseph.”

Best moment as an athlete: “Probably being able to play under Coach K, and we won the Maui tournament last year which was a big deal. Also, winning those big games at (North) Carolina and at Maryland.”

How he chose his current uniform number of 25: “It’s our family number. My dad wore it, then my older brother wore it and then my sister wore it. So now I wear it.”

Hidden talent: “I can juggle.”

Favorite things about New Orleans: “The food, and the team.”

Pregame ritual: “I always take an hour nap and I always try to eat something good. I usually eat pasta and chicken.”

First job: “I got picked at 10th for the New Orleans Hornets and I love it.”

Favorite athlete as a kid: “I would say probably Kobe Bryant.”

What he’d be doing if he weren’t an NBA player: “I would be a broadcaster or something with basketball.”

Closest friends playing on other NBA teams or in other pro sports: “I know a lot of other players in the NBA obviously because of my dad and playing with them growing up. I played some with Kevin Durant, John Wall and Kyrie Irving. In the NFL, I know Brandon Spikes who plays for the Patriots.”

Favorite type of music and artists: “Hip-hop. It would probably be Lil’ Wayne or Drake. Maybe Kanye West or Jay-Z. I really can’t pick one. I love it too much to pick one.”

Favorite TV show: “Maybe NBA TV? I don’t really watch reality television. I think it’s awful. I really liked Entourage but they don’t show it anymore. I really like Curb Your Enthusiasm, too.”

Favorite movie of all time: “Shawshank Redemption. It’s just a great plot, great acting, great everything.”

Favorite website: “World Star Hip-Hop. Greatest website ever. It just has all kinds of crazy videos on there.”

What he enjoys about Twitter: “Just reaching out to kids who look up to you. The whole point of Twitter is to re-tweet kids who look up to me and connecting with the fans.”
