Game Rewind: Pacers 115, Lakers 108

Game Recap

In a game in which the Pacers had held a 16-point lead, the atmosphere at Bankers Life Fieldhouse suddenly grew tense when Lou Williams hit a stepback 3-pointer from the corner to pull the Lakers within two points of the lead, 96-94, with just over six minutes left in the game.

The Pacers had lost a lead in their opener against Dallas, yet won out in overtime. They lost a lead in Brooklyn, but never managed to recover. However, on their home floor on Tuesday night, Paul George lifted the Pacers with timely deadeye shooting to grab a 115-108 win over the Lakers.

With 3:50 remaining, Lou Williams hit on an and-1, sinking the the free throw to bring the Lakers within one. On the next play, Larry Nance Jr. hammered home a dunk to give the Lakers their first lead since the early minutes of the first quarter.

Trailing 106-105, Pacers head coach Nate McMillan called a timeout in an attempt to steady his starting unit. On the next three offensive possessions, Paul George sank jumpers from the wings, sending the crowd into frenzy when his third one fell in to give the Pacers a 111-108 lead with 1:08 remaining in the game.

On the other end of the floor, George went straight up to contest a layup attempt at the rim from Jordan Clarkson. The Lakers guard missed the shot and George recovered the loose ball, and was subsequently fouled, giving Indiana possession with 32 seconds remaining.

With the Lakers' odds of winning dimming, they elected to foul George to stop the clock, but PG hit all four of his late free throws to seal the game and reach the 30-point mark. George scored the Pacers' final 12 points in a spectacular close out performance, giving the Pacers an important win on their home floor.

"I just had an opportunity to try to win the game for us and took advantage of it," explained George after the game. "I thought the matchups, they had me matched up against a point guard, were something that Nate saw and he called the plays for me. I knew I had to continue to be aggressive, especially since I felt they would guard me the same way."

The night got off to a peculiar start when the game clock froze after tipoff, but the Pacers got things moving with Thaddeus Young pushing the tempo in transition. Young scored seven of the Pacers' first 12 points, including a fastbreak layup assisted by Jeff Teague. He finished the night with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

When the first quarter came to an end, Indiana led 27-18, having made 4-of-8 3-point shots, two of which came from C.J. Miles.

Midway through the second quarter, Myles Turner, who started off quiet, had a sequence that ignited the crowd at The Fieldhouse.

On a drive to the hoop, Turner took the basketball right out of the hands of Tarik Black in a hybrid of a block and a steal. On the other end, Turner dished a pass to a wide-open Monta Ellis for a 3-point bucket. The second-year center wound up with nine points and six rebounds.

After a Lakers timeout, the Pacers pushed ahead on a 10-2 run, highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Teague, who finished the half with five points and four assists.

In opening up the second half, the Pacers were met with resurgence from the Lakers, as L.A. chipped off a 12-2 scoring run to open up the third quarter, shrinking Indiana's lead to just one.

"I was thrilled with the way we competed in the second half but the first half was the worst half of basketball we have had all season and it’s tough to dig yourself out of it but we did a good job digging ourselves out of it," Lakers head coach Luke Walton said. "It’s tough on the road to get yourself out of that."

Indiana pushed back, ending the third quarter with a Miles 3-pointer and a Lavoy Allen putback. Even with the late charge, however, the Pacers entered the fourth quarter with their lead whittled down to just five.

From there, the teams traded buckets up until Paul George's heroic finish, pouring in the Pacers' final 12 points of the fourth quarter to secure the win.

The win puts an abrupt end to the Pacers' two-game skid suffered over the weekend, bringing their record to 2-2 and dropping the Lakers to 1-3.

"We’ve got to iron our wrinkles, find a way to win," head coach Nate McMillan said of his group's night. "I thought our guys battled. I liked the rotation tonight. I thought our bench gave us good play tonight. They made some plays and they made some tough shots. They’re a good, young team."

You Can Quote Me On That

"We were searching for players to go to. Down the stretch we’re looking for different combinations. Paul hit his first shot and he looked like he wanted the ball and we milked it. All-Stars like that, you expect them to make plays like that. That’s what makes them great players. We were taking advantage of what the defense was giving us. " -Pacers head coach Nate McMillan

"We needed stops. Everybody came together and showed heart and passion. We really wanted to win this game. We had to lock down to do that and we did that. At the end of the game we came together as a team, got stops and got a win." -Monta Ellis

"Paul George is really good. We did a phenomenal job coming back in the second half and we started playing with the energy and effort that we needed to play the whole game with. Shots that our guys usually can hit rimmed out and Paul George took fade-aways with guys all over him and he hit them and that’s what he does." -Lakers head coach Luke Walton
