Matchup

The Chicago Bulls travel to Indianapolis to play the Pacers after facing the Houston Rockets at home on Christmas day. The Pacers, meanwhile, will be rested, having had three days between games.

Without Derrick Rose, the Bulls have remained near the top of the Central Division standings, where the Pacers are a half-game ahead in first place. All but four of their losses have come to Western Conference foes, and primarily on the road.

Lacking at the guard position, the Bulls frontcourt is one of the best in the league. Luol Deng is averaging some of the best numbers of his career: 18 points, and seven rebounds per game. Carlos Boozer can be counted on to battle inside and end the night with a double-double, and Joakim Noah is solid inside, good for 13 points and 11 rebounds a game.

As you would expect with a Tom Thibodeau coached team, the Bulls are defensive-minded ball club. They are second in the league in opponent field goal percentage (42 percent), behind the Pacers. They also boast the second-best free throw percentage in the league (80%).

The Bulls arrived in Indy late last night after getting drilled at home to the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day. They didn’t just lose badly (23 points), but they were lifeless in their worst loss of the season (23 points). To make matters worse, Luol Deng sprained his right ankle in the first quarter and is questionable for tonight.

Indiana, meanwhile, has won six of their last seven (including three in a row), and hasn’t played in three days. Will the Bulls slide continue or will they return to form against the Pacers?

Last Meeting

Indiana wrapped up four-straight road games at Chicago and came away with a win, 80-76. Late in the fourth, the Pacers scored eight straight to take the lead. With 14 seconds remaining, the Bulls had one last crack at it. Bulls forward Luol Deng drove the right baseline to the basket and was blocked by Roy Hibbert, who went straight up. Hibbert has consistently gone straight up on defenders and the officials awarded him with a no-call.

This was Paul George’s first game after being held scoreless out in Golden State. He changed his routine and dropped 34 points on the Bulls in the win. Hibbert and David West each had 10 points. Nate Robinson scored a team-high 19 points off the bench and Carlos Boozer finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
