Sage Steele – Deserved Success

Sage Steele of ESPN is a self proclaimed "Army brat." Born in Panama, she has lived all over the United States. But she proudly says she is a Hoosier and loudly cheers for her alma mater, IU and "her" Colts and Pacers.
She only lived in central Indiana for a few years; moving here initially for her senior year of high school before graduating from Carmel. She then spent four years at Indiana University before keeping Indiana ties while working in TV in South Bend (WSBT) and Indianapolis (WISH).
She continued to pay dues working in Florida and then became a star in Baltimore covering the Ravens and soon was off to the World Wide Leader and ESPN. Today, she is one of the most popular anchors in Bristol.
Sage brought her family (her husband is a Ben Davis grad) back home to Indiana this week for a few days. Her three kids LOVE the Pacers and she had to bring them by Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The kids shot around on the team’s practice court and were given a private tour of the Pacers locker room by team VP Greg Schenkel and Pacers Internet maven, Matt Cooper. Along the way, they ran into new Pacers guard DJ Augustin and talked about the upcoming campaign. They received some Pacers goodies, including a personalized signed jersey from Roy Hibbert. Sage and her family departed from the Fieldhouse with great memories and vowed to be back.
I first met the soon-to-be 40 (but looks no older than 30) Sage when she was roaming the sidelines covering the Ravens. Always nice. Always professional. Pure class. And smarts! Just the perfect combination you want in a reporter!
Sage Steele is a role model for any female looking for a future in sports broadcasting. She has reached one of the premier levels of the business at one of the great sports networks. It should not be a shocker she is a trailblazer. Her dad was the first African American to play for Army in the mid 60s.
Through it all, she has remained humble. And loyal. Loyal to her family. Loyal to her friends. And loyal to her Indiana "home."
