OWENS, LOGAN IN SUMMER CAMP
Local Talents Hope
to Stick with Pacers

Local talent has played a role in the Pacers' rookie and free agent camp this week at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Two Indianapolis products, Andre Owens and David Logan, are looking to catch the eye of the coaches. Both players are back in town to prepare for next week's Orlando Summer League competition.

After starring on the Perry Meridian high school team, Owens headed to Indiana University. After only one season he transferred to the University of Houston, where he started every game and averaged 18.3 points.

The combo guard then entered the draft in 2005 but went undrafted. He signed with Utah and appeared in 23 games for the Jazz but was traded to Golden State and waived before the start of the 2006-07 season. He went on to average 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists with Anaheim of the D-League.

Since his career at Houston, he says he’s “10 times better.”

He also hopes that his previous NBA experience will give him some leverage at the camp.

“Playing for (Utah) Coach (Jerry) Sloan and coming back to play for (Pacers coach Jim) O’Brien, they’re kind of the same way,” he said. “You have to play as hard as you can and have fun doing it.”

Making a name for himself at the University of Indianapolis, Logan carried the Greyhounds to success. In 2005, Logan was the NCAA Division II Player of the Year.

“Instead of going to a really prestige school, I got to put up good numbers and get recognized that way,” he said. “Everybody can play, whether you went to a big school or not.”

The Indianapolis guard is trying to prove that to O’Brien right now. As camp goes on, he has been working on defense and shooting from the outside.

Staying confident while playing hard is the key to succeeding in the summer camp. Both players are happy to be back in Indiana where their careers first began. Now it is up to the coach to determine if either will fit the team.

Noteworthy: On Friday, the Pacers waived Giorgos Diamantopoulos, Jamel Staten and Guillaume Yango from their Rookie/Free Agent Camp roster. That roster now stands at 15.
