QUESTION OF THE DAY
Conrad Brunner
Q. I'm from Carl English's home town of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada, and was wondering how much his 1-of-10 shooting night against Chicago would hurt his chances of making the team. It seems like most of the rookies/younger players have had at least one dud in the preseason. How much weight does the coaching staff put on a weak performance? (From Travis in Indianapolis)

A. Well, going 1-for-10 never helps a guy’s cause, but it might not have hurt as much as you’d anticipate in this case, because the coaching staff has seen enough of English’s shooting ability in practice and scrimmages to conclude that performance was an aberration. In relatively limited preseason minutes, English has demonstrated pretty solid skills with the ball, and he’s a willing defender, albeit with room for improvement. What he needs to show the staff is a high level of preparedness. If he beats long odds and makes the roster, he’d be in the position of 11th or 12th man, which means he rarely would play. Guys in that role have to be able to come off the bench cold and contribute, even if they haven’t played in a week or two.

With all of the injuries confronting the team at the moment, English is going to get the opportunity to play in these next two preseason games, making this a big weekend for him. English will be playing in front of a dozen or so scouts from other NBA teams so, even if he’s unable to crack the Pacers’ roster, he could help himself earn a job. After he went undrafted, the two teams that showed the most interest were the Pacers and Timberwolves, but he chose Indiana because it was the first team to make an offer. So you know the Wolves’ coaches and scouts will be watching with interest. And they won’t be alone.
