QUESTION
OF THE DAY

Conrad Brunner
Q. Do you think the Pacers significantly lack outside shooting, have opposing defenses found a major weakness, or is the team just not executing well lately? (From Tom in Westfield, IN)

A. It seems odd to even consider the possibility the Pacers are a sub-par perimeter shooting team, considering their recent history, but it has definitely become a problem. Reggie Miller is the only defense-stretcher on the roster. Ron Mercer needs to help carry this load but long shooting slump has hurt not only his confidence, but the coaching staff's confidence in him. Erick Strickland is a reliable 3-point shooter but isn't the type of threat that forces defenses to adjust. So yes, it would appear defenses have identified this weakness and are focusing on containing the inside game as priority one. As for the third part of your question, that, too, is a resounding yes. The team doesn't have the spacing, movement or crisp passing that made the offense a joy to watch throughout the first half of the season.
