Dunleavy, Hansbrough expanding roles

By Conrad Brunner | Dec. 13, 2009

There are still limits for Mike Dunleavy and Tyler Hansbrough but they are not as limiting.

With both players able to play roughly 24 minutes, Coach Jim O'Brien has begun using them more frequently in the fourth quarters and their performances have been critical to the two-game win streak the Pacers take into Orlando Monday (7 p.m., Fox Sports Indiana, 1070 The Fan).

Dunleavy made two huge plays in the final seconds that produced a stunning 114-113 win in Washington Saturday. Trailing 113-110 after Hansbrough made the first of two free throws, Dunleavy told the rookie to miss the second on purpose. When he did, Dunleavy snuck inside, grabbed the rebound and was fouled, making both free throws with 13 seconds left to make it a one-point game.

After Gilbert Arenas missed two free throws to leave the door open, Dunleavy walked through, drawing a foul after catching Earl Watson's inbounds pass in front of the basket and making the winning free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining.

"Those were two clutch foul shots," said O'Brien. "That says a lot for him. He's really exhibiting some great leadership in huddles and it's nice to have Michael finally back with us."

Against New Jersey Friday night, the Nets were rallying in the fourth quarter, cutting a 21-point lead to 11 but Dunleavy hit a 3-pointer that effectively ended their comeback.

In the two victories, Dunleavy, who is working his way back from major knee surgery last March, totaled 39 points and made 10-of-17 from the field and 7-of-9 from the 3-point line, adding nine assists and seven rebounds. Hansbrough, who missed most of the summer and all of the preseason with a shin injury, has produced 40 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 15-of-32 (.469).

The rookie scored 13 in the fourth quarter in Washington and four of the Pacers' final six points to help put away the Nets.

"He can be a great defensive player," said O'Brien. "He really gets after it. He has tremendous lateral speed, he closes the gap on people very, very quickly. The key to him progressing offensively is hitting that 17-18-foot shot. When he forces people out to him, they know he's a really good shooter, then it'll open it up for his drives to the basket."

Orlando (17-6) is coming off a four-game road trip in which it lost the last two games, including a 106-103 decision in Phoenix Friday night.

TRENDS
The Pacers are 3-1 in games Danny Granger has missed this season and 16-9 overall. … Jones has shot 16-of-43 (.372) in the previous five games and missed his last 10 attempts from the 3-point line. … T.J. Ford is 0-of-19 from the 3-point line and has missed 27 in a row dating back to last season. … Troy Murphy has seven double-doubles and averaged 16.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, .558 shooting overall and .458 from the arc in the last five. … Brandon Rush has averaged 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and .500 shooting in three games since returning to the starting lineup. … Earl Watson has 23 assists off the bench in the last three games. … The Pacers, who've averaged 110.5 points in winning their last two, are 6-5 when they score at least 100, 2-8 when they do not.

KEY MATCHUP
Dwight Howard dominated the Pacers last season, averaging 24.8 points, 17.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks while attempting 48 free throws in four games. Roy Hibbert won't have to handle him alone, certainly getting help from Jeff Foster, but the Pacers need to keep this matchup from swaying the game in Orlando's favor.

SERIES
The Magic won three of four last season and five of the last six overall. Still, the Pacers lead the overall series 40-34 with a 15-22 record in Orlando.
