Nets winless but nonetheless dangerous

By Conrad Brunner | Nov. 16, 2009

The Nets are convinced 10 is enough, while the Pacers want more than four.

Hoping to rally their fan base to help bring an end to the team's 0-10 start, Nets management has designated Tuesday's game against the Pacers (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Indiana, 1070 The Fan) as "10 is Enough" night, with free and discounted tickets aimed at packing IZOD Center.

Though the Pacers (4-3) have a four-game winning streak and are fresh off a 113-104 defeat of Boston Saturday, they are acutely aware of the danger that awaits them in New Jersey.

"This game, we're very cautious about," said Danny Granger. "When you have a winning streak going and you beat a top team like Boston, the tendency for a team is to relax a little bit, especially when you're going into New Jersey where they haven't won a game yet this season. It's a dangerous situation because it could really kill our momentum, get them going with their first win, so it's a very important game."

Last season, the Pacers had a tendency of following up inspiring victories with depressing slumps. After beating the Lakers at home on Troy Murphy's tip-in at the buzzer, for example, they dropped six in a row. After beating Phoenix on Granger's buzzer-beating 3-pointer, they lost three straight. After beating Orlando at home, they lost in Washington. After beating Cleveland at home, they lost in Milwaukee.

You get the picture.

Have they learned that lesson?

"We're going to find out tomorrow," said Granger. "To our credit, we have beaten the teams we're supposed to beat this year as far as on paper. We had so many games like this last year; we beat the Lakers but lost to Oklahoma City. We can't have that this time."

The Pacers haven't won five in a row since late in the 2004-05 season when they won six straight. With back-to-back games against the Nets and Knicks (1-9), they have a golden opportunity to match that number – if they can avoid letdowns.

"It's a big test for us," said T.J. Ford, who will return to the starting lineup at the point after coming off the bench Saturday because he was still recovering from back spasms. "These next two games are definitely going to be a test to see how mentally strong we are, how we've grown as a team and as individuals.

"I don't think we're looking past neither one of these teams. First we've got to take care of Jersey. But we're feeling good. The ultimate thing is, when you're on the road, to set the tone from the tip and that's what we've got to do."

Murphy could return to action, but not lineup
After missing the last four games with a sore back, Murphy could be in uniform Tuesday in his home state. He returned to practice full-speed Monday.

Murphy said he didn't know if he'd play against the Nets.

"The problem is it was my back so I couldn't do anything for like a week so the legs and everything, this being the first day back, I'm just trying to get my legs under me, just happy to be out here," he said. "I'm just looking forward to getting back into any mix at this point. I'm excited to get back to play any time. It's been a long couple of weeks for me."

The Pacers won four straight in Murphy's absence, employing a small lineup. Coach Jim O'Brien said he'd stick with that group Tuesday.

"My inclination is to stick with the same group but that doesn't mean his minutes are going to be cut any when he's healthy," O'Brien said. "It's tough to go away from a group that's 4-0."
