Pacers Honor Winners of Making the Grade Program
On Friday, April 1 when the Indiana Pacers face the Milwaukee Bucks, the Pacers will recognize the top essay winners of the 2010-11 Making the Grade Program, sponsored by the Indiana Pacers and in partnership with The Indianapolis Star.
Each day, thousands of newspapers are delivered to area schools through The Star's Partnership for Young Readers program (PYR). The PYR staff works with schools, teachers and area businesses to bring community awareness and literacy to students. In addition, teachers use the newspapers to teach reading, science, social studies, economics and other lessons.
As part of the PYR program, Making the Grade is an educational feature designed to encourage students to read, reflect and respond. Students were encouraged to respond to Boomer’s thought-provoking question of the week and submit their essay to be eligible for tickets to a Pacers game. Each week the Making the Grade feature consisted of health and fitness tips from the Get Pacers Fit program presented by Kroger, a Pacers player feature, and the All-Star Essay of the Week.
