Leonard to be Honored at "Monster Masquerade"

Pacers News Release | October 14, 2004

Former Pacers coach and current radio analyst Bob Leonard will be honored at the third annual “Monster Masquerade, Presented by National City Bank,” a fundraiser for the Pacers Foundation and the Simon Youth Foundation. This year's event, an evening of frightening fun and entertainment in the wicked woods, will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom.

Leonard, the coach with the most wins in Pacers’ franchise history, will be honored during the event for his service to various community organizations in Indiana.

As a Pacers’ head coach for 12 years, Leonard won 529 games and three ABA championships. Before coming to the Pacers, “Slick” had an outstanding playing career on the high school, collegiate and pro levels and was named as one of the state’s “50 Greatest Players.” A two-time All-American at Indiana University, he was captain of the Hoosiers’ 1953 championship team. He played seven years in the NBA with the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers.

"I can’t think of anyone more appropriate to be honored than Slick,” said Pacers Sports & Entertainment CEO/President Donnie Walsh. “It’s not just what he means to the Pacers’ franchise, but to the state of Indiana and the city of Indianapolis. He is Indiana basketball, from his high school career to his career at Indiana University to his coaching success with the Pacers to his beloved status as part of the Pacers’ broadcasts on radio.

"This honor for Slick is like a game-winning three-pointer. It recognizes him for what he has meant to the community, both professionally and personally. To borrow from him, this is the epitome of a ‘Boom Baby.’ "

Monster Masquerade includes cocktails, followed by a sumptuous dinner, dancing to the music of Big Fun and a variety of entertainment. There will also be a live auction with many 'one-of-a-kind' items. Guests will be greeted by a host of their favorite storybook characters from the wicked world of fables.

Platinum sponsors to date for Monster Masquerade include: Entertainment Design Group, Melvin Simon & Associates, National City Bank, Pacers Sports & Entertainment, Republic Waste Services, Publicis, Simon Property Group, Sport Graphics, and Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Monster Masquerade begins at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception. Dress is cocktail attire. Tickets are $250 each and can be purchased individually or a table of eight for $2,000. They are available by calling Sarah Baird at the Pacers Foundation, (317) 917-2864.

The annual “Monster Masquerade” is jointly sponsored by the Pacers Foundation and the Simon Youth Foundation. Net proceeds of the event are shared equally by the two organizations dedicated to the betterment of youth.

Since its inception in 1993, the Pacers Foundation has awarded approximately $3.5 million in grants, scholarships and community ticket blocks. The foundation is dedicated to inspiring and motivating youth to become involved in community activities, take their education seriously, set personal goals, visualize their dreams and take responsibility for their own lives and neighborhoods. Its mission is to touch the lives of Indiana’s children in a positive way.

The Simon Youth Foundation, established in 1998, has awarded more than $2 million in one-time and renewable monetary scholarships. The foundation fosters and improves educational opportunities, career development and life skills for at-risk youth through focused programs and initiatives. Its mission is to positively impact the lives of today’s youth through two major initiatives: Education Resource Centers and scholarship programs.
