Colangelo, Krzyzewski on Paul George Injury
Editor's Note: Following Paul George's injury in the USA Basketball scrimmage, Director of USA Basketball, Jerry Colangelo, and head coach Mike Krzyzewski addressed the media in a press conference.
"This is a very tough blow. Not so much about us but about Paul. It's a first for us in USA Basketball to have something like this take place. It’s a tough situation for our entire organization, our coaches our players, very very emotional. There’s no way the game could have gone on under the circumstances.
We need to take a step back before we do anything at all. Our primary concern is Paul George.
This is a tough play not only for USA Basketball, but also for the Indiana Pacers.
We are going to let time go by before we address anything like rosters. It seems so unimportant in the big scheme of things. When you have something like this happen it puts things in perspective.
Ramifications and all that stuff are for another time. We need to step back. No decisions for awhile; we need to step away.
"Everything’s on hold and should be. It would be so inappropriate for us to talk about anything else when there is a serious injury like this.
[On the players reaction] The main thing was their concern for Paul. We told them to relax and not worry about playing again and put all our focus and energy on (a higher power) and focus on Paul
Anything can happen anywhere. A lot of things happen. Tonight it happened during a basketball game. We need to take care of that. It doesn’t mean it will happen again and again and again. It means it happened right now and we need to take care of right now appropriately and move on.
There’s a brotherhood in the NBA. To me in moments like this, a family or brotherhood shows its heart and depth and that’s what I feel our players showed at that time.
We focused on prayer and thinking about Paul George; it wasn’t a time to have a discussion.
