Boomer Encourages Kids to Get Movin’
In uneven, scattered rows children ranging in ages from as young as three to 14 spread themselves arm length apart in the Indiana Pacers practice court to take part in Boomer’s Bootcamp, as a part of the Dribble to Stop Diabetes campaign.
The Dribble to Stop Diabetes is a national level campaigne in partnership with the National Basketball Association, the Women’s National Basketball Association and the NBA Development League along with the American Diabetes Association and Sanofi US to help encourage fans and supporters of the NBA to live and lead a healthy lifestyle.
The event, emceed by Pacers Sports & Entertainment coordinator of Community Relations Richard Smith, allowed young fans a chance to get up and get moving with an impromptu fitness instructions from the Pacers mascot Boomer and Pacers power forward Jeff Pendergraph.
Boomer came in to the event full of energy and immediately got down to business, leading the youth through stretching drills and aerobic activities to get the young participants pulses racing.
Smith and Gipper Monson, a representative for Sanofi US, helped remind the kids how important it is to start exercising and eating healthy early in life to ensure a good health.
Monson enjoyed being out and seeing the kids be active as a part of the Dribble to Stop Diabetes campaign and is pleased with how the event turned out.
Pendergraph entered the room to expressions of awes and applause as the audience waited for him to tell them some tips of staying healthy. He reminded them to eat their vegetables and shared that his wife makes him a turkey and cheese pregame bagel to get him prepared and motivated for the game.
After doing some fast paced exercises to songs such as “Teach Me How To Dougie” and “Move it, Move it” the kids took a water break before taking a group picture and getting a ticket to attend the game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Selected participants were chosen at random to participate in the Kroger Hive Five club before tip off, an on court contest with boomer and a check presentation of $1,500 to the American Diabetes Association (Indianapolis Chapter) during halftime.
The American Diabetes Association of the Indianapolis Area was in the main concourse before the game helping to encourage healthy lifestyles and provide tips of how to start living one.
Joy Mahoney, the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications for the chapter, informed us that 1-in-4 Indiana residents are at risk for Type 2 diabetes and encourages all to get tested. You an get a simple at risk test at any events where the Association will be in attendance or online at www.diabetes.org.
