As people soaked up the sun and threw Frisbees near the bank of the Mississippi river, one woman made a habit of setting things ablaze at The Fly, a waterfront section of Audubon Park in New Orleans.

“I’ve started doing fire poi dancing,” Denver Nuggets Dancer Lynn says in a remarkably matter-of-fact tone. “It’s two weighted balls on a string – but they’re on fire.”

If that wasn’t enough to catch the eye of park-goers enjoying life at The Fly, Lynn also does fire hooping, which is similar to fire poi, only with a hula hoop. She got hooked after taking a class at a dance studio in New Orleans.

“I tried it out and just fell in love,” she said. “You take the right measurements and precautions beforehand. I wear protective gel. Other than that, you just have to be careful and know your surroundings.”

The New Orleans native recently changed surroundings, moving to Denver after earning a spot on the 2014-15 Nuggets dance team. She also danced for the New Orleans Pelicans when they were still nicknamed the Hornets in 2011-12.

Lynn spent the past two years as a member of VooDoo Dolls, the dance team for the New Orleans VooDoo of the Arena Football League. While she enjoyed the gig, Lynn was eager to return to the NBA.

“I fell in love with the NBA after my season with the Hornets,” she said.

“The Denver Nuggets Dancers caught my eye with their YouTube videos. I researched teams, and everything about the Nuggets was perfect. They’re involved in the community and their dancing is amazing.”

Before moving to Denver earlier this month, Lynn received her degree in psychology from Loyola University. She juggled on-line exams and dance routines while auditioning for the Nuggets last month.

After that, she crossed her fingers and waited for her name to be called among the final 16.

“I tried to be as confident as possible, but you never really know,” she said. “I was holding my breath.”

Lynn exhaled when she officially became a member of the 2014-15 Denver Nuggets Dancers. She is looking forward to a new adventure with a new team in a new town.

“The city is wonderful,” she said. “I can walk out my house and see mountains. That is the coolest thing for me. Everyone’s so nice. The people are blowing me away with how nice they’ve been.”

Soon it will be Lynn’s chance to wow the crowd. She’s certainly ready to set Denver on fire.
