With a Spanish translation app in hand, Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson is serving as a hoops ambassador in Spain.

“I’m loving it right now,” he said in a telephone interview from Valencia on Friday. “It’s beautiful. It’s like California-type weather.”

Lawson is representing the Nuggets as part NBA 3X, an annual competitive 3-on-3 tournament that helps promote basketball throughout Europe.

After arriving in Spain this week, Lawson spent some time enjoying the sights and cuisine in Valencia. He attended a Euroleague game on Thursday and visited with children at a school for the mentally disabled on Friday.

“It’s fun,” he said. “We’re having fun with the kids and meeting new people.”

Lawson said he hasn’t seen any Nuggets jerseys in Spain, but he’s looking to change that during his visit.

“They’re selling Miami Heat jerseys and Oklahoma City jerseys,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll make some Nuggets fans.”

The 3-on-3 tournament in Valencia takes place Saturday and Sunday. Lawson’s teammate Kenneth Faried will travel to Leon for another NBA 3X event next week.
