Iverson Named NBA Western Conference Player of the Week
Nuggets guard honored for the third time this season

DENVER, Apr. 14 -- Denver Nuggets guard Allen Iverson was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Monday, April 7 through Sunday, April 13 the NBA announced today.

Iverson led the Nuggets to a 3-1 record, including two key victories at Golden State and vs. Houston to aid the Nuggets 2008 playoff hopes. Iverson averaged 28.8 ppg on .533 (40-75) shooting from the field, while he also tallied 6.8 apg and 4.8 rpg in 42.0 mpg, which included a 48-minute outing at Golden State on 4/10.

This marks the 23rd time in Iverson's career that he has garnered this honor, while it is his third in the Western Conference and third as a Denver Nugget. He was also named Western Conference Player of the Week earlier this season on Nov. 19 (for games played from Nov. 12 through Nov. 18) and on Jan. 7 (for games played from Dec. 31 through Jan. 6).

Iverson joins Carmelo Anthony and Alex English as the only players in Nuggets history to have won the award multiple times during the same season. Anthony has done so three separate years, including 2007-08 (two POW honors), while English did so on two separate occasions (two POW honors in both 1982-83 and ’85-86). Iverson’s three POW awards this year tie Anthony’s team record for POW honors in a single season (2006-07). The five combined POW honors between Iverson and Anthony this season mark a team-record for the most during a single season.

According to an unofficial all-time awards list from the NBA, Iverson is now tied with Karl Malone for the second most POW honors all-time in NBA history, trailing only Michael Jordan’s 25.
