Denver Nuggets Set to Honor Historic 1993-94 Team

DENVER, Feb. 25, 2014 - The Denver Nuggets will honor the heralded 1993-94 team during a special 20th Anniversary Celebration on March 17 when they host the Los Angeles Clippers at 8:30 p.m.

Coaches and players from the 1993-94 Denver Nuggets will be at Pepsi Center to celebrate their upset of the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1994 NBA playoffs. Denver became the first eighth-seeded team to beat a No. 1 seed in NBA history.

The current Nuggets will wear the navy, gold and maroon jerseys worn by the 1993-94 team for one night only, and all game presentation elements will incorporate elements from that historic season. The coaches and players from the 1993-94 team will be honored at halftime with a special recognition ceremony at center court.

“We are excited to celebrate one of the most iconic and inspiring teams in Nuggets history,” said Nuggets Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Tim Connelly. “The memories from that season and playoff run make up a major chapter in Nuggets history, and a story we are thrilled to share with our current fans and players.”

The 1993-94 Nuggets finished the season with a 42-40 record and qualified for the NBA Playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Denver earned a first-round matchup against the top-seeded Sonics, who finished with the league’s best record at 63-19.

After losing the first two games of the series, the Nuggets returned home to McNichols Arena and rallied to tie the series at 2-2. The teams would then square off in a deciding Game 5 in Seattle, with Denver prevailing 98-94 in overtime.

The historic upset was capped by Nuggets center Dikembe Mutombo clutching the ball while lying on the court at Key Arena. The image has become a quintessential moment in Nuggets history. Denver would then move on to the second round of the NBA Playoffs, where they eventually fell to the Utah Jazz in a compelling seven-game series.

Tickets to the Nuggets vs Clippers game on March 17 can be purchased online at Nuggets.com or by calling Altitude Tickets at 303.893.TIXS (8497). The game will be broadcast on both Altitude Sports and ESPN.
