Getting to Know the Nuggets: Chucky Atkins
Before getting into the non-basketball questions, I'd first like to take a moment to welcome you to the Nuggets and get some of your feelings about becoming a Denver Nugget.
It's my pleasure. Yeah, I’m ecstatic to be here. I’m just extremely happy because I think we have a great chance of winning a championship here in the future.
How do you think you fit in with this team . . . both on the court and in the locker room?
I feel like I’m going to fit in well on the court. A couple of things this team didn’t have last year I bring to the table. Off the court, I feel like I can fit in well with anybody. I’m a pretty easy going person, so I shouldn’t be that hard to get along with at all.
What is it you you would say you bring to the table here with the Nuggets?
I’d say I bring outside scoring and the ability to spread the court. As well as getting up and down the court with speed and quickness.
What are your first impressions of George Karl and the coaching staff?
I’ve always admired Coach Karl from a distance. When I was in Detroit he was a rival of ours in Milwaukee, and I admired his team’s playing style and the way they always played so aggressive. The rest of the coaches here are also great. They're extremely hard workers and it seems like they’re always on the court working guys out. That’s what I like because I’m that type of person as well.
As a point guard, how excited are you to play alongside two All-NBA scorers like Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony?
Oh man, it’s a dream. Anytime you’ve got guys that can score like those guys can it’s a dream. I think it’s going to be important to see how well we can gel with each other and play together.
Do you have any history with any of the current players on the Nuggets roster?
I played with Allen (Iverson) and Marcus (Camby) in the college All-Star game way back in the day, but I think that’s about it. Everybody else I’ve just played against.
Coming from a rebuilding team like the Grizzlies, what are your expectations for this team in the coming years?
I expect to win. Not just be winning team, I expect us to win a championship.
What are your first impressions of the city of Denver so far?
It’s different from what I thought. Coming here over the years while being on other teams, you’re mostly just in and out without a chance to do anything. I came here and had a chance to see the city and everything seems fine. It’s seems like it’s a really great city and I look forward to making a home here.
