Scores 35 points to Lead Team USA over Italy
Anthony Scores USA Record
Team USA and Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony scored a USA-record 35 points including 19 in the third quarter to carry Team USA to a 94-85 comeback victory over Italy today. The win also gave the United States the top seed in Group D.
The Italians took a 45-36 lead into halftime after outscoring the United States 26-11 in the second quarter. Enter Anthony. Behind his 19 third quarter points the USA regained the lead in a close hard fought battle. Anthony added 10 points in the fourth quarter and Team USA avoided the scare.
Anthony broke the previous U.S. scoring record set by Kenny Anderson, who scored 34 points in a 1990 World Championships game. Anthony finished with 35 points on 13-17 shooting, including 5-7 from the three-point line. He added five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 35 minutes.
Anthony and Team USA will face the fourth-place team from Group C on Sunday in the round of 16.
