After an inspirational debut in 2012, the 2nd annual Jessica Redfield Ghawi giveSPORTS equipment drive will be held at Pepsi Center this Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.

More than 25,000 pieces of sports equipment, along with $10,500 in cash donations and $20,000 in scholarship funds, were collected during the inaugural event last September.

The equipment drive was inspired by Ghawi, a former Altitude Sports & Entertainment intern and aspiring sports reporter. She was among the victims of the Aurora theater shooting on July 20, 2012.

Before her death, Ghawi was in the process of collecting hockey equipment to donate to the families impacted by Colorado wildfires. The giveSPORTS event was expanded to include new and lightly used equipment from all sports.

The equipment drive is a joint effort of Kroenke Sports Charities, the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Mammoth and Altitude Sports & Entertainment. All donations will benefit the Jessica Ghawi Scholarship Fund and A Precious Child, a non-profit organization that works with more than 150 Denver-area community organizations to distribute the equipment.

Several Nuggets players were on hand last year to help collect donations. Among them were guard Evan Fournier and forwards Kenneth Faried, Quincy Miller and Anthony Randolph.
