Lawson Surprises Youth Athletes
Nuggets point guard presents check at Dick’s Sporting Goods “Sports Matter” celebration
Ty Lawson surprised children from local sports teams by presenting checks at the Dick’s Sporting Goods “Sports Matter” celebration.
The participating teams fundraised for five weeks, and with Dick’s Sporting Goods matching their efforts, the teams received checks totaling $130,000.
The children were ecstatic to see the Nuggets point guard, and Lawson was glad to be able to make the day special. “It makes me feel good inside,” Lawson said. “It makes me happy to see them smiling.”
After presenting the checks, Lawson led the children in lay-up drills and a game of knockout.
“Sports Matter” is a nationwide program focused on the youth athletic program funding crisis. According the The SHARP Center, 27 percent of U.S. public schools will not offer interscholastic sports programs by 2020. Across the country, the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation’s Sports Matter initiative has raised over $4 million in funds.
