Westword recognizes Nuggets for smart use of social media
In a crowded Denver sports market, the Nuggets have been recognized for their ability to connect with their fans through Facebook and Twitter.
During its inaugural Web Awards party last week, Westword selected the Nuggets as the Denver sports team that makes the best use of social media.
“Social media is about hustle as much as it is about clever tweets or timely Facebook news,” the newspaper wrote. “The Denver Nuggets strategy seems to work in time with its on-court play. Run by Movement Strategy, the Nuggets on Facebook and Twitter keep in touch with fans, with only a slight filter that makes you think its run by a PR firm.”
Under the guidance of Movement Strategy founder Jason Mitchell and Jared Harding, manager of interactive media and digital strategy for Kroenke Sports Enterprises, the Nuggets have seen tremendous growth in social media over the past two years.
The Nuggets have nearly 300,000 Facebook “likes” and almost 29,000 Twitter followers. Both totals have more than tripled in the past 12 months.
"We're always looking for new ways to engage and connect with our fans," Harding said. "Ultimately, we hope our involvement in social media will help the bond between the Nuggets and the fans grow stronger than ever."
The Nuggets’ outside-the-court thinking was evident last week in a social media showdown with New York Knicks fans.
Despite playing in a significantly smaller market, the Nuggets generated more Facebook “likes” than the Knicks (921-579, at last count) on the same day that Denver beat New York 120-118 on the hardwood. Nuggets and Knicks fans also traded trash talk via Twitter throughout the day.
