Nuggets.com Q&A: Ty Lawson

Lawson, the Nuggets' speedy reserve guard, is living out his dream as a rookie

On draft night 2009, the Denver Nuggets acquired the draft rights to NCAA champion Ty Lawson, the 18th pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Nuggets play an up-tempo style, which fits the speed of Lawson.

Lawson will be the most anticipated addition to the Nuggets this season and Nuggets.com caught up with the point guard to talk to him about the Tar Heel connection as well as his dream come true.

Nuggets.com: There was a lot of talk about you possibly playing in Denver last season as well. Does it seem like a match made in heaven?

Lawson: Yes it does. They (Nuggets) play the style that I love and they know that I play that style well. Also I think the UNC connection with coach (George) Karl helps out a lot. So I definitely think it’s a match made in heaven.

Nuggets.com: What are you looking forward to the most about your rookie season? And the least?

Lawson: Just being able to play in the NBA, which has been a dream of mine since I was very young. I want to be a part of a team and make a run at a championship, which is what it’s all about. I can’t say that I’m least looking forward to anything because this has been my dream since I was eight years old.

Nuggets.com: Being a Tar Heel, do you think Coach Karl will cut you any slack during your rookie year?

Lawson: Oh, no! I think because I am a Tar Heel it will make it that much harder. That will be my expectation all year.

Nuggets.com: How do you think playing under Chauncey Billups will help your development as a professional?

Lawson: On and off the court he will be a great influence. He has been everything that I want to be in my career: an NBA All-Star, an NBA champion and a true professional. I will be paying a lot of attention to him and I will be making him my mentor.

Nuggets.com: The Nuggets will be traveling to Asia this preseason to face Tyler Hansborough’s Indiana Pacers. What do you think it will be like going up against your ex-teammate for the first time? Are you guys making any plans to hang out while you are out there?

Lawson: It’s going to be fun. We were good friends when we were teammates at UNC and there’s going to be a lot of bragging rights if we get the win. I’m sure we’re going to hang out and get some dinner when we get there, go shopping or whatever; so it should be fun.

Nuggets.com: Which individual opponent are you most looking forward to playing against for the first time? (Kobe, Kidd, LeBron, etc.)

Lawson: I want to play against all the greats like Chris Paul. Probably him the most because I have seen him play a lot while he was in college. Kevin Durant as well. I’ve grown up knowing him here (Washington D.C.) and he’s my friend, so that will be cool.

Nuggets.com: What is your favorite thing to do other than play basketball?

Lawson: I like to make beats and do a little rapping. My best friend makes beats and it has kind of rubbed off on me. It’s just for fun though. I know I’m not going to make a career out of rapping or anything like that.
