After attending a USA Basketball mini-camp last summer in Las Vegas, Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried wasn’t sure if he had done enough to earn a return call.

“I was a lot on the fence,” Faried said. “There’s a lot of great guys out there. I didn’t play major minutes for the team, so I was kind of worried.”

Faried’s concerns proved unwarranted. Earlier this week, he received a text from USA Basketball officials, notifying him that he was among the 28 players selected for the 2014-2016 U.S. Men’s National Team roster.

The roster was officially announced Thursday.

“To be invited to Team USA to play for my country is an amazing feeling,” Faried said. “I’m very excited about it; I’m very enthusiastic about it. I haven’t felt this way since I made it to the NBA. I just want to keep grinding and show I can make the team this summer.”

USA Basketball, led by chairman and national team managing director Jerry Colangelo, will choose 12 players to take part in the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain. Faried also will have an opportunity to compete for as spot on the 2016 Olympic team, should the United States qualify.

Drafted by the Nuggets 22nd overall in 2011, Faried has averaged 10.8 points and 8.4 rebounds while earning a reputation for his energy and effort in three NBA seasons. He is averaging 10.1 points and 7.7 rebounds in 38 games this season.
