The Qwest Leadership Challenge presented by the Denver Nuggets, in partnership with the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) encourages basketball student-athletes to make a difference in their communities. The program is designed to develop leadership within interscholastic athletics and promote community service and commitment. The Qwest Leadership Challenge is open to varsity basketball players (male and female) throughout Colorado.

Nathan Rueb
Nathan volunteers at his local elementary school in Vona, Colorado. Two mornings a week he listens to the students read, helps them with their class assignments and assists the teachers with grading papers and other odd jobs. On Saturdays you can find Nathan assisting with the pee-wee basketball practice. Nathan enjoys his work because, “it’s a lot of fun working with the little kids especially because they are so enthusiastic and willing to learn.” Nathan fulfills the Qwest Leadership Challenge with his volunteer work on and off the basketball court.

The Qwest Leadership Challenge offers two levels of participation:

  • Team Challenge: Varsity basketball teams (Boys and Girls) may sign up to participate as a group. The team must complete 60 hours of community service during their season. Qwest will provide a $500 grant to the teams’ designated non-profit or school upon completion of the challenge. Participants in the team challenge are not eligible for the college scholarship.

  • Individual Challenge: Varsity basketball coaches may nominate one player from their team to complete the challenge. This individual must complete 30 hours of community service during the season. Upon completion, Qwest will provide a $250 grant to the athlete’s designated non-profit or school and an additional $250 donation will be made to the participant’s school basketball program.

Students participating in the individual challenge will complete for a $5,000 college scholarship (one each awarded to male and female athlete). The scholarships will be awarded based on the student’s exemplary service, leadership and commitment to their community as demonstrated through their Qwest Leadership Challenge project.

Students in the Qwest Leadership Challenge must commit to completing the challenge between November 1, 2007 and March 7, 2008.
