at End of the Year Celebration

On June 19th, Nuggets center Marcus Camby lit up the lanes and the faces of 18 Denver Public School children in downtown Denver. Camby and participants in his Marcus’ Mentors educational program were at Lucky Strike Lanes for the end of the year pizza and bowling party.

Known for his Cambyland Foundation and work in the Denver community, Marcus is constantly giving back.

Marcus’ Mentors consists of eight juniors and seniors from Denver Public Schools high schools who meet with and tutored 18 fourth and fifth-grade students from Mitchell Elementary School in Denver. Upon successful completion of the program, each mentor receives a $2,500 college scholarship for college. The elementary school students are rewarded throughout the school year based on attendance, academic performance, and good behavior.

Camby greeted the students with high fives and smiles while making sure to ask them how they finished the school year.

Leo Hope, a ten-year-old fifth grader from Mitchell Elementary, expressed his appreciation to his mentor and his favorite Nugget by thanking them for all they did this year.

Jessica Quintana, a recent graduate from West High School, will be using her scholarship money to attend the Community College of Denver in the fall. When asked about the party Jessica said her favorite part was, “getting to take a break from doing the homework. We get to talk and hangout with Marcus and the kids get to play.”

Armed with his personalized ABA look-a-like bowling ball, Marcus spent about two hours hanging out and bowling with the kids.

“Probably the best part of the Marcus’ Mentors is the wrap up party where I get to see everyone before they go off for the summer. Now that they are out of school, they can come here and bowl and feel free and enjoy themselves,” Camby said.

Even though the Nuggets Center stands 6-foot-11 he fit right in with DPS students laughing, joking, rolling strikes and picking up spares.

After the pizza and bowling, Marcus took time to reward the mentors and students with autographed #23 jerseys, certificates and gift bags filled with Nuggets goodies.

“I love his involvement with the kids. I know he has been really busy this year. He gives so much encouragement to them. Especially with the scholarship money they receive. You see how he acts with the little kids here, this is just very cool for them,” remarked Denise Flanders, Denver Kids Counselor and Coordinator for Marcus’ Mentors. “It is a nice way to close the year out, just to have some fun together. To see him one more time is really big to the kids.”

Marcus didn’t take all the credit for this program himself, “As you know I do a lot of stuff in the community. I take pride in myself about giving back and being out there helping out the less fortunate. But every step of the way my mentors have been there. The Thanksgiving Turkey Drive and my Cambyland Christmas, they have always been there. It’s going to be sad having a couple seniors that will be leaving the program.”

Final Boxscore: Marcus Camby ended the day with an average score of 160 - five strikes, nine spares, two splits, and 18 kids with smiles on their faces.

Marcus Camby will be hosting his basketball camp for Boys and Girls Ages 7-17 on July 21-25, 2008 at East High School. For more information please visit www.cambyland.com and www.nuggets.com.
