Nuggets center Marcus Camby launched the third season of his Marcus' Mentors high school mentorship after-school program on Sept. 27. The program consists of tutoring sessions conducted by nine Juniors and Seniors from three DPS high schools. Marcus' Mentors is operated by the Cambyland Foundation in conjunction with local non-profit Denver Kids, Inc.
Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin was at Montbello High School on Sept. 13 to speak with students about gang violence and how it can negatively affect their lives. Martin joined other community speakers during the assembly, labeled “Rally to ‘Pass’ on Violence,” which was coordinated by the Youth Counseling and Intervention Program (YCIP) and hosted by Denver Public High Schools.
The Denver Nuggets/Colorado Avalanche Prep League has been a success since its inception in 1997. By creating a sports league (volleyball, basketball, soccer, cross country, baseball, softball and flag football) for boys and girls in 25 DPS middle schools, more than 3,500 middle school students participate in 1,800 games in the league annually.
