NUGGETS EXCELLENCE IN COLORADO HS ATHLETIC TRAINING AWARDS
Each season, the Denver Nuggets honor outstanding high school training programs in Colorado and Wyoming. 2011 winners were honored on court at Pepsi Center prior to the March 12 Nuggets vs. Pistons game. The awards program is the concept of Jim Gillen, Head Athletic Trainer for the Denver Nuggets.

"There is a great need for Certified Athletic Trainers in our high schools," said Gillen. "For the past eight years, we have helped Colorado and Wyoming High Schools, provide excellent care to their athletes and also educate students who want to pursue a career in athletic training."

Each High School Athletic Training Department received $2,000 to help support high school athletic training programs including training room improvements, supplies, and student training. In addition, each training department received an Automated External Defibrillator. The award recipients will spend a day working with the training staff of the Denver Nuggets and tour the team's athletic training facilities.

New this year is the Comeback Athlete of the Year award given to one high school athlete to recognize his/her efforts in recovering from an injury or illness (not necessarily related to sports performance). The Comeback Athlete will receive a $1500 scholarship for post-secondary education and their high school athletic training department will receive $1000.

2011 Award Recipients Include:

High School Athletic Training Awards

Frederick High School - Frederick, Colorado - Megan Hooded

Greeley Central High School - Greeley, Colorado - Marquee Swank

Sheridan High School - Sheridan, Wyoming - Joanne Brewster

Comeback Athlete of the Year

Chris Hansen - Fossil Ridge High School - Fort Collins, Colorado

Any high school that is a member of the Colorado or Wyoming High School Activities Associations and has a Certified Athletic Trainer as a member of their staff is eligible for the awards.

Presenting Sponsor of the program is Health One's Rocky Mountain Youth Sports Medicine Institute. Additional sponsors include Centennial Sales, Gold Crown Foundation, JCGC Foundation, Game Day Memories and Kroenke Sports Charities.
