Nuggets coach Brian Shaw has tabbed assistants Noel Gillespie and Patrick Mutombo to handle coaching duties for Denver during the 2014 Samsung Summer League in Las Vegas.

Mutombo, who recently completed his third season on Denver’s coaching staff, will be guiding the summer-league team for the first time.

“It’s big,” Mutombo said. “I’m thankful that coach Shaw is giving me the opportunity to keep growing and putting me in a position where I can help this organization in that capacity.”

Gillespie, who joined the Nuggets prior to the 2013-14 season, helped coach Phoenix Suns’ summer-league team during his 10 years with the team as an assistant, scout and video coordinator.

“We’re so grateful for coach Shaw giving us this opportunity,” Gillespie said. “He’s letting us run with the playbook and the offensive and defensive concepts. The ability to run our own team is going to be huge. It’s a great opportunity.”

Gillespie and Mutombo will oversee a two-day minicamp in Denver before heading to Las Vegas on Thursday. The Nuggets’ first game is Saturday against the Toronto Raptors.
