NEW YORK, April 18
-- Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce
and San Antonio forward Tim Duncan
today were named Eastern Conference
and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for games played in April.
Pierce averaged 25.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.50 steals while helping lead
the Celtics to a 7-1 record in April. Duncan led the Spurs to a 9-0 record by averaging 26.3
points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.78 blocks.
Here is a look at highlights from the month for Pierce and Duncan:
Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics April 5 vs. L.A. Lakers: Had 33 points in 99-81 win over the visiting Los Angeles
April 7 at New Jersey: Scored 32 points including 16 in the fourth quarter as the
Celtics defeated the Nets 102-90.
April 12 vs. New York: Had 20 points, six rebounds, eight assists and seven steals as
the Celtics defeated the visiting Knicks 107-92.
April 15 at Minnesota: Scored 31 points while adding four rebounds, five assists and
two blocks as the Celtics defeated the Timberwolves 93-90.
Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs April 3 vs. Seattle: Had 30 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists in 90-88 win over the
April 6 vs. Dallas: Had 33 points, including the game-winning basket, and 16 rebounds
as the Spurs defeated the Mavericks 89-87.
April 12 at Detroit: Scored 32 points while adding 14 rebounds, seven assists and four
blocks in a 96-86 win over the Pistons.
April 16 vs. Phoenix: Had 24 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three blocks as the
Spurs defeated the Suns 95-71.
Other Eastern Conference candidates for NBA Player of the Month included Chicago’s Jalen Rose, Detroit’s Chuck Atkins, Indiana’s Jermaine O’Neal, Orlando’s Tracy McGrady and Philadelphia’s Eric Snow.
Western Conference candidates for NBA Player of the Month included Los Angeles Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal, Minnesota’s Kevin Garnett, Sacramento’s Chris Webber and Seattle’s Gary Payton.
