July 31--NBA Legend George Gervin talked with NBA.com about Tuesday's trade that brought Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics.
What It Means For Boston
This deal obviously means they are going to move up a notch in the East. Kevin Garnett brings a whole lot to the table just being Kevin and playing like he has played over the years, which is one of the top players in the game. He plays smart, he rebounds, he scores, he blocks shots and even though they don’t give hustle points, he hustles and plays hard all the time. That is an ingredient that Boston can use.
That triangle of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Garnett is just going to make them a very tough team. These guys have all been in situations where none of them really went anywhere during their careers and here is an opportunity for them to put their minds and their games together and see whether or not they can pull Boston out of its recent lack of success and make a name for the team. These guys all have names for themselves, but being able to bring Boston back in the fold of things should be extra incentive because it has been a while.
It should be a fun year for Boston and you know that fan base is excited. I think it is going to work out. Of course it can always be a bust, but I don’t think so. Time will tell. On paper Boston looks good.
What It Means For Minnesota
The Timberwolves are going in another direction. You can’t fault Garnett for it since they did go to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004, but they never really got it done with him in Minnesota. So I guess they are trying to move in another direction. Obviously they are thinking about the future. You just have to wait and see how these guys like Jefferson and Green turn out. Theo is in his last year so they’ll save money with that and a few of the other players are nearing free agency. They’re making room to get somebody. In the end, they’re in the rebuilding stage and Boston is ready to win.
