July 31-- Legendary coach Chuck Daly talked with NBA.com about Tuesday's trade that brought Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics.
Don’t Punch The Ticket To The Finals Yet
This is a treasured franchise in the NBA and they have been on hard times for any number of years. They haven’t had a significant win in the playoffs since back in the late '80s. This puts them in a position to not only be a playoff team, but as I have seen in some online polls, they are favored to be the team to represent the East. I think some teams will have something to say about that – the Detroit Pistons for sure, the Cleveland Cavaliers, depending on their health, the Miami Heat in particular, and Chicago. There are some teams that certainly will challenge that.
KG: Scoring And Defense
Garnett brings not only the scoring but the unselfishness and the ability for the Celtics to not give up second shots. Last year he averaged about 13 rebounds per game. That is not going to allow for a lot of second shots and with their potential offensive ability with three guys easily able to get 25 a night, that is 75 before you start the game. It is kind of an interesting potential.
Minnesota’s Perspective
They have gone the route that they could with one player pretty much holding their franchise afloat year after year. Garnett had another year until his opt out, so they made the decision to move on, get younger and try to rebuild the club much like some other teams in the league.
Boston Revival
The deal revives their fans, gives them a lot of hope, and you’ll see a big pickup in everything up there, from the businesses around their building to the interest in the NBA. We’ve needed a good Eastern team quite frankly, and if they don’t have any injuries, this very well could be the team.
What Doc Will Do
Just because they have Garnett, Pierce and Allen, this is not smooth sailing. Doc Rivers is going to have to figure out how to distribute the ball. You only have one and these are three guys who are used to pretty much carrying the load for their teams. So there are going to have to be some sacrifices made and I think Doc will have to figure that out or play like Phoenix and shoot every seven seconds.
Good For Both Teams; Very Good For Ainge
Danny has taken a beating over the years and he saw the opportunity to get this franchise moving in the right direction and even be a contender, and I think he said this is potential salvation. By the same token I think Kevin McHale will look at a rebuilding year and re-evaluate his situation. I think it is good for both teams.
