DEC. 13, 2006 – Paul Arizin, one of the pioneering players that laid the groundwork for modern basketball, passed away Tuesday in his sleep at 78. The Hall of Famer was a key member on the 1956 Philadelphia Warriors team that won the NBA title.

Remembering Paul Arizin

"Paul was a great asset to the league and to his team," said Arnie Risen. "He was the kind of person that you really appreciate because he represented all facets of the game and the purpose of sportsmanship.

"The jumpshot with Paul was more or less coming in the game at that time (1950s). Of course Joe Fulks who preceded him in Philadelphia never saw a shot he couldn’t shoot. I think Paul was one of the first better jumpshots in the League. Quite a few of the boys afterwards followed it. The jumpshot more or less got its start out West. But Paul was probably one of the first Easterners who really developed it.

"He was quite an institution around Philadelphia."

"In my 61 years in the NBA, I’ve met countless players and coaches, but there was none more likable than Paul Arizin who passed away on Wednesday," said Sixers longtime stat guru Harvey Pollack.

"Paul not only was a most friendly type but was also one of the most talented players I ever saw play. The NBA has twice cited him for his exploits, first naming him to its 25th anniversary team and then recognizing him as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History."
