Nets Acquire Mutombo for Van Horn, MacCulloch

East Rutherford, NJ, Aug. 6 -- The New Jersey Nets have acquired All-Star center Dikembe Mutombo from the Philadelphia 76ers, it was announced today by Nets President/General Manager Rod Thorn. In return, the 76ers receive forward Keith Van Horn and center Todd MacCulloch.

Van Horn will be taking his shot to Philly, while Mutombo hopes to control the paint in New Jersey.

“In bringing Dikembe to New Jersey, we have added a perennial All-Star to our roster,” said Thorn. “He is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year who is one of the leading rebounders and shot blockers in the NBA. Dikembe’s presence in the middle will strengthen our interior defense and his attributes fit in well with our overall style of play.”

The 7-2 Mutombo is an 11-year NBA veteran who has career marks of 12.3 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.4 blocks in 840 games. Over the course of his career, Mutombo has accumulated 10,373 points and 10,317 rebounds. Last year with Philadelphia, Mutombo averaged 11.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks and was named All-NBA Third Team and NBA All-Defensive second team. Mutombo has played in 66 playoff games in his career (Denver-15, Atlanta-23, Philadelphia-28), averaging 12.7 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.3 blocks.

Mutombo, who played his college ball at Georgetown, was selected by the Denver Nuggets in the First Round (4th overall pick) of the 1991 NBA Draft. Mutombo played for Denver from 1991-96 (391 games), and was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Hawks in the summer of 1996. He played for the Hawks from 1996-97 midway into the 2000-01 campaign (343 games), when he was traded to Philadelphia on February 22, 2001. Mutombo holds the NBA career record for most consecutive seasons leading the league in blocked shots per game, three, from 1993-1996, and was the NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times (1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001). An eight-time NBA All-Star, Mutombo was an All-NBA Third Team selection in 1998 and an NBA All-Defensive First Team selection three times (1997, 1998 and 2001).

The 6-10 Van Horn, a consensus All-American out of Utah, played five seasons with the Nets, averaging 18.2 points and 7.6 rebounds. Last season, Van Horn averaged 14.8 points and a team-high 7.5 rebounds, scoring 20+ points 14 times while recording 17 double-doubles for the year. Drafted by Philadelphia in the First Round (2nd overall pick) in the 1997 NBA Draft, he was acquired by the Nets on June 27, 1997 as part of an eight-player trade. Van Horn appeared in 23 playoff games with the Nets, averaging 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds. He leaves the Nets as the team’s 6th all-time leading scorer (5,700 points), and is 3rd all-time in three-point shots made (335).

The Nets signed the 7-0 MacCulloch as a free agent on August 7, 2001. The Washington product appeared in 62 games for the Nets last year, averaging 9.7 points and 6.1 rebounds. MacCulloch appeared in 20 playoff games with the Nets, averaging 6.2 points and 5.2 rebounds. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, MacCulloch was selected by Philadelphia in the Second Round (47th pick overall) of the 1999 NBA Draft.
